NEVER unload your car on the street side! Here's what I do, for any ladies (guys too, but let's be real…) who are in the habit of unloading with your back to the street:
1. Park, turn off the vehicle, check your mirrors, then check the sidewalk side, then check your mirrors again.
1a. If there are pedestrians or cyclists close, wait for them to pass. If you're on a busy street where that's not possible, give everyone close a good scan, and trust your instincts. Any hint of sketchy, wait.
1b. Get your shit together while still in the vehicle with the doors closed and locked, you don't want to be futzing around repacking your grocery bags or gathering kid's toys while bending over with the door wide open- you are off-balance then and easy prey.
2. Leaving your purse and any other bags in the vehicle, take ONLY your keys and open the door only as much as you need to slip out, do not dally, and do not turn your back to the street to close the door. Close the door and head around to the other side of the vehicle in the same motion, scanning both ways on the sidewalk side as you approach.
3. Now on the sidewalk side you're facing the street and should make a habit of scanning and watching out of the corner of your eye. If you have kids or a dog in the car, take them and only them out of the vehicle, leave the groceries, lock the doors and bring them inside. You don't want to have an armful of grocery bags blocking your vision AND a loose kid trailing behind, or a dog's leash around your wrist. Always consider how astoundingly vulnerable that scenario makes you.
4. Ideally, ditch the damn purse or use a messenger bag style that crosses securely and hugs close to your body. You can also get a cover for your cell phone that has a pocket in the back to hold your license and one or two credit cards. Put your keys on a carabiner and clip them to your beltloop, if you have them. I'm about 130lbs and my S9 cover/wallet fits in my back pocket, but obviously that's for when you're wearing clothes that have a back pocket.
The explanation may be lengthy but the actual process takes seconds. Do it every time even if all you have is a purse, and it won't take long before it's second nature. Be vigilant and make your actions efficient and decisive. Don't give them a single opening.
