Red dots are becoming more and more popular as both the prices are coming down and manufactures are making the slides ready to add a red dot sight.
In this video I will cover a lot of things to consider and think about while using a red dot sight on your pistol. Using a red dot is a very nice optical aid but the fundamentals still apply to shooting well while using one. As for the fundamentals most are still the same as when using iron sights. The only one major change is swapping the order of “sight aliment” and “sight picture”. ID your target first (this is your sight picture) and then bring up the pistol putting the red dot in line with the target (this is sight aliment). Your focus should remain on the target the whole time unlike using iron sights.
I also talk about different makes and types red dots, bottom line you get what you pay for. If you are new to using dot sights you should start off with a larger MOA dot until you get use to them then move to a smaller dot in time. There are so many different things out there for dot sights and more thing are coming everyday. I talk about a few of them here such as mounting plates, holsters, hoods and iron sights to use with them.
Like I started out with I said these are optical aids, you still need to know how to use iron sights. Because, if your sight fails (and it will at the wrong time), you will need to know how to go back to the basics of irons for techniques in order to use the pistol effectively. If you are new to shooting with a pistol using a dot should come easy but if you’re like most of us here at Tactical Rifleman then it will take a little bit of extra time dry firing and on the range to help getting use to it.

So I currently have a holosun 507 red dot along with suppressor sights on my Glock 17. Where do you suggest I should put the red dot. Above the front sight?

What I don’t get is the iron sights are on a different body part so how does the red dot hit somewhere else ?

I'm also noticing a running gag in red dot instructions on youtube. No one ever turns their sight on. Probably an important step.

I realize this is a few years ago but on a Romeo1pro if you are practicing on a close up target the dot is typically 6 inches higher than the bullet. Even with the adjustment all the way "down". How do you compensate this in a CQB situation? I realize Sig recommends X amount of yards for a true zero but most all defensive situations are closer and the point of impact is much lower than the actual dot.

I shoot USPSA much better with a 5” Gun but if I went to a S&W M&P 4.25” metal gun with a dot sight would that reduced barrel length be a problem for me like the iron sights are.

Don't make the mistake that anyone younger than you is a Millennial. Nearly all Millennials will get your references. Generally the Gen Z and these "Alpha" kids are the ones that don't know anything lol.

I just bought a red dot. It’s awesome. Easy to adapt to and easy to sight in with a laser bullet

Great tips to counter all of the failure conditions that usually get used to argue against using red dots altogether.

When you use red dot 🔴, do you focus red dot on target and shoot? Or red dot to front site then target ? Today an older gentleman told me at the range to align front site and red dot to target ! The red dot was bouncing left and right.
    Thank you

This was the best video on this topic I've watched so far. It covered all the fundamentals and all the differences between traditional sight focusing and red dot focusing. I've got to train my brain now because I don't have red dots on every pistol I have

I resisted red dots for years and finally mounted one on my Walther PPQ and yes I'm having trouble. Shot better with the iron sights.

My instructor is having me use my NON dominant eye to look through the red dot window. He said with red dots that better. But now when I use my iron sights gun, I have to present differently (more to the left) bc I’m using my dominate eye to line up the iron sights. Any suggestions? Do you agree that non dominate eye should be used to spot the red dot?

Thank you so much … I have watched 8 other videos before this one and still had questions. This was the most thorough video I’ve seen. Plus it wasn’t boring at all. You are obviously a professional instructor whereas the other videos were just good guys trying to help others. Again… thank you and I’m headed to the range tomorrow to put this all in practice.

Have a P365 SAS as my EDC and wear it IWB, and I've been wanting to add a reflex to it and was hopeful that you guys that carry this configuration with a reflex mounted and carry IWB can share a comfortable Holster! Also, what you guys use on your P365 SAS for reflex! I think ill need a mounting plate as well. I see Someone mentioned the Venom 3MOA in the comments that auto adjusts to brightness and auto on/off in and out of holster which peaks my interest. what kind of mounting plate and Lock tight is needed? will the Venom 3MOA fit and is there a comfortable IWB holster available? Any comments Appreciated!

Great informational training. I was confused about red dots on a pistol. Sometimes having the iron sight and co witnessing throws me off.
