This week, on Tactical Rifleman, we are going to do a brief introduction into the M-249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW). Pretty well everyone in the modern US military is familiar with this weapon. It’s used in base defense, mounted on light vehicles, and is the “Suppressing Fire” weapon of all our infantry squads. We aren’t going to bore you with all the statistics. If you want to know the text book maximum effective range, then go to an E-5 Promotion Board. Rather, we are just going to cover Load/Unload/Malfunctions, and then wrap it up with dumping 400rds into a couple illegally parked cars.
I want to give a special “Thanks” to all our Patreon supporters. With their help we are going to be able to step up our video content. So, if you want to help out, please check us out on Patreon.
Besides better videos… How about REAL Training? The Tactical Rifleman crew will soon begin offering open enrolment courses, on a variety of subjects. These courses can be held here, OR we can travel to your location, if you have enough clients and a range/classroom to support the training. So, for those of you that have been hinting about attending a class; start finding like-minded friends, and we’ll be putting classes together soon.
Hope you enjoy. Strength & Honor, TR.

Lovely Video !!!!!
I wish I can get my hands on that !!!!!
In the Australian Army we called them LSWs, Light Support Weapon as it didn't have a beaten zone like say a GPMG. That was a long time ago so maybe things changed. We were trained for 2 to 5 round bursts.
Now this is going to sounds dumb but watching this video has helped me get better with my airsort 249 saw
Damn…I miss the Army
I missed this part in basic training. Instead of doing the “US Weapons” section of BCT, the drill sergeants had me wait with an injured troop who broke his ankle on day two…thanks for the info my man!
Owi needs to see this lol love the vid!
It could work as both assault rifle for quick movement/ accurate firing and machine gun providing lengthy cover fire for squad's movement.
Option for magazine beside drum makes it a really good choice.
That is alot of freedom per second
Great gun, but 556 is shit.
I was a SAW gunner in Iraq 2003-2004. The entire year there my baby NEVER jammed on me and she was dead on accurate. It broke my heart to have to turn her in after we got back home.
This M249 saw and the M240 are both good weapon platforms both of the FN design!!!! The Belgians. Make damn good firearms !
Sounds a Lot like weapons qual at Custer!
Headnod every redneck reference
Thank you old man for the knowledge on the Saw .
M249 is not generally made for left-handed people
I was a saw gunner in Iraq and Kuwait
Was really scared for a second there that that was gonna be a semi automatic
Definitely a love/hate relationship with these weapons. Turned it into the armour before deployment, got it back with NO sling!!! Shitty 11months but funny to look back on
Half life opposing force Weapon
The NGSW SAW totally left out the most important feature of an automatic rifle: the ability to change barrels. After 200 rounds of sustained fire on an M249, you can just swap the barrel and be good to go. On the NGSW SAW there is no barrel change. Also on the NGSW you can't just use STANAG mags. Once your belts are gone you're out of rounds. You can't just use your buddy's mags, like on the M249 (and yes, I know they suck in the M249 but it's still an option in a pinch).
Ive got one in my cab with me at the moment
