I think he did the correct thing by moving the car forward. The guy may have had a gun and reversing the car to create space could have been disastrous. By moving forward, he had the option of flooring it if a gun came out.

I wouldn't back up. Threat in front, unknown situation on the back. Divided attentions is hard to comprehend especially with limited visibility. Careful with the gas pedal or just stop and call the cop. If the situation escalade to life-threatening, i dare say, vehicle-borne weapon is not a bad idea.
Expect when we defend our selfs we get arrested that's why people don't defend themselves or there home or there country

the legislature needs to do a better job of defining legal action when motorists are stopped by pedestrians with hostile intent, we keep seeing protesters stop traffic this way.. and frequently enough the driver is pulled out and beaten half to death. often times thieves , murderers and rapist will use the same tactic ..does it make sense to require a driver to speed away in reverse and potentially harm others to save an aggressor form what most people would think is the obvious consequence of such a decision?

I was on my way home at midnight. A woman in the far distance was stumbling drunk, crossing the crosswalk ….
All of a sudden, she streightens-up..and starts sprinting right toward me in the fast lane ! …I had just enough time, to slam on the brakes ! Eeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrt !
She slapped both hands down on the hood of my car in that second ! In the middle of the street . And yelled, "Get out of my waaaaaaaaaaay !!!" So,..I floored it in reverse, and then drove around her . Whew ! That was close ! I almost killed her ! Wierd ! Really wierd ! Today, I'm convinced she was sound asleep while standing there …
