Fantastic general strike video, definitely used to be the only top knuckles crowd, and still habit tends to go that way but when up close, I often catch myself using the middle two more when striking while maintaining guard. Tend to always lean on elbow anything when in doubt beyond that šŸ˜…

That was very interesting. I think movies have a lot to answer for in the mindset of punches are best. I’m a palm or slap guy.
Cool ending to the video by the way!

My Tae Kwon Do instructor taught us to strike with chops or palm strikes, he said fist strikes do more damage to you then your opponent

I like Mr Goat's teachings from A to Z's. His voice temperament helps the student understand each point of detail as he explains it. šŸ¤œšŸ‘ˆ TY Mr Goat

One of the best videos on knuckle striking. I always wondered why people talk about the top 2 knuckles being aligned. The index knuckle always sticks out! Also, you're right, doing a push up on the top 2 knuckles is very hard. Surely that means the best position is the bottom 3. Top 2 is useful when the fist is horizontal and opponent further away.

Thank you, Sensei. I am an older mid-belt in Aikido, and have arthritis in my right middle finger first knuckle and my right index finger won't bend enough right now. I look forward to trying your technique(s).

Full respect to Mr. Goat who has one of the best self-defence channels. But it has to be said that a standard one-on-one self-defence situation, does not quite necessitate board-breaking strength and matching knuckles to decommission your assailant if you otherwise know what you are doing. It is best of course if you have conditioned knuckles at least to an extend. Use the first 2 knuckles, which as it happens are naturally structurally stronger, and worry more about wrist alignment, TIMING, and target hitting.

Wow so far best video on bare knuckles I saw. You deserve deep bow. My expierence is somehow similar, as wing chun i found out I am hiting with bottom 3 to targets above roughly solar area, but below I am switching to upper 2. I tested it on wall by pushing and these position gives the least stress on my wrists. So results may vary to inviduals, but so far what I found not much. Also in moment we took elbow up, like for hooks, than is just super messy for me as than depend on rotation of wrist. I think universal rule is elbow, wrist and impact surface of knuckles HAVE TO be aligned, but that also means that you can not perform some techniques when you only focus on given knuckles.
TLDR:Totaly agree you should condition whole fist as impact agles will change on technique.

So different applications for different ranges of striking? Elblows for skull? In Wun Hop Kuen Do, I saw knuckle strikes effective for nerves/plexes, just the bent finger at the second knuckle.

Have you ever been in a real fight? Never hit anybody in the head with your hand. You will break your hand.

Great video. I would use all of them. The trick is to have conditioned hands. Be it your knuckles The Ridge of your hand or your palms you need to be prepared. Your bone density and will increase over time.
