I was out at the rifle range, working with some Air Force Medical people, and they had brought about a dozen crates of good military 5.56mm ammo. Each crate has two ammo cans. Each ammo can, when opened, provides you with a number of cloth bandoliers. Each bandolier has 4 cardboard sleeves, a speed loader, and a black safety pin. Each cardboard sleeve contains 30rds of ammo on three 10rd stripper clips (for use with the speed loader). That makes for a lot of trash when you’re doing 4 hours of Failure and Box Drills out on the hot range.
What prompted me to do this video was when some of the Air Force guys were saying that they had no idea what the bandoliers or the safety pin was for. It was all just trash to them. I started having flashbacks to my time in different military schools and times when seasoned soldiers took the time to explain it to Private Erickson. So, let’s share a little military history, or at least, this is how it was explained to me. You’ll know why I grab the bandoliers and safety pins at the range now, when no one else will; and you’ll never look at those ammo bandoliers the same again.
Thanks for watching, TR.

I can't find them anywhere to buy?
This kind of video is my favorite.
I had to chuckle a bit about the safety pin…I learned the exact same thing from an SF medic during first phase back in '79!
As always Great info. Thanks
I continue to learn everyday essential information. And try to remember training and tactics I forgot from 50 years ago….thanks
How does swallowing your tongue work? It seems to be connected closely to your mouth.
Fun fact those speed loaders (as long as Winchester uses the same ones) work on P-mags, I didn't know that and couldn't find a solid answer elsewhere on the internet so I ran a very scientific and highly skilled experiment of buying some and trying it lol
Those who needed to learn this from Youtube probably shouldn't go to war
Tax money well spent for once
Karl, I know this is old, but I loved you talking about the safety pin. Long time ago, I was on a range that caugh fire. They sent us out with shovels and the flappers, and long story short one of the guys went into anaphylactic shock (severe reaction to something that was on fire) and some Voodoo medic pinned his tongue to his lip so he wouldn’t swallow it. I’ve had a large safety pin with me ever since. People think I’m insane when I tell them why…
You blew when you pinned the tongue to the lip.
Son of a bitch, didn't know about the white string on the bandaleer . Cool
Hey man, if it keeps you guys alive, here's my tax dollars. Better than giving it to the Taliban…
Thank you, Sir
Keep buying your extra magazine, we got your Bro.🙂👍
Ugh geez. Thanks a lot for using my money to buy extra mags. That was my strip club and coke money! lol
That safety pin in particular is not for pinning tongues to lips. It's for shortening the bandolier strap if needed so as not to go swaying around when running. Also, it's for use in baby cloth diapers……
When he pulled that string, blew my effing mind 🤯
Excellent video! Extremely informative. Thank you for sharing!
Me: Doesn't like murder and bloodshed.
Me: Also loves learning how spec ops kill fuckers fast
Wow! Good shit to know about bandoliers!
I have lots of bandoliers always full and ready to go! Good video!
When did they change bandoliers from 7 pockets to 4?
my mom safety pins socks to my chest to hold my mags …#fruitOFtheLOOMtactical
Excellent
I keep extra extra mags on hand loaded..!! Thanks Karl..
Now that was badass
I remember back in ‘05 when I just picked up CPL. One of the SSG’s showed me what is in this video and I had that stunned, the more you know, holy S**t look. We did exactly what you did in this video and kept about 4-6 full ammo cans on each vehicle. The military does sometimes think hard about practicalities.
bro that modular m4 looks beautiful
Amazing, how something so simple can be so beneficial.
You do know that in USSR you get fully loadade mags in crates.
Thats how you do emergency resuply, not ammo in carboard boxes.
What gun are you wearing in this one?
You look like a tactical Norm MacDonald.
Some people seem to have a lot of trouble using the provided loader, can't figure it out for some reason. My old Gunny showed us that if you still have the ammo box, a table, any kind of an edged surface, push the last round in on the edge insead. Saves your thumb too.
I learned to use another mag to push the rounds in.
The safety pin is so you can adjust the strap to a length you can use without it flopping around on you.
But as I have a speed loader myself now, I still keep one on my keychain next to my John Wayne can opener.
Never know when.
It’s probably not fun to wake up to your tongue safety pinned to your cheek🤔
Where can I find these foxes for sale?
Why don't modern military rifles have stripper clip loading directly into the rifle, SKS-style, but also having detachable magazines?
I would've never guessed that Seth MacFarlane was an avid shooter?
I respect your training as a former SF Medic Karl, but I would advise doing the safety pin trick. You can use it to replace the pin when defusing old style booby traps but the medical use you suggested it for has many other less invasive alternatives.
Swallowing one's tongue does not happen literally unless the tongue is physically cut off and jammed down the patient's trachea or esophagus. However the tongue itself IS the most common airway obstruction in altered or unconscious patients.
This can be simply remedied by turning the patient to his or her left or right side; you CAN maintain spinal immobilization while doing this if one man supports the head during the log roll, then you place IV bags, boots, rolled blankets etc on either side of the head once the pt is rolled.
Using the safety pin as an impromptu tongue pinning device creates an airway hazard if it is not properly placed. Also, in truly denied environments with no timely access to helo medevac, it creates an infection and tetanus risk.
Thanks for your time doing all these videos
If my memory serves me correctly I believe this was the first video I ever observed on your channel… fall 2018 I believe
I like this video a lot. A good combination of practical tips, technique, war story and history!
