When faced with an attack or even a physical fight the best thing to do is get out of the situation as fast as you can. Knowing how to throw a good punch could be the thing that buys you some time to escape the situation.

My limited experience indicates that palm would be the best. Is there a reason for choosing fist over palm?

IMHO, a palm to the face while lunging forward with the striking hand will do more to stun the attacker, while saving your hand and knuckles from breaking. It's basically a lunge punch, but with the palm.

A good point is you began by trying to move back, and he pursued you aggressively: this helps with your SD claim if it ends up in court.

Sifu Kevin, so your step back keeps your lead foot forward, rear foot push off with straight punch. Loaded rear foot push off like a JKD Straight punch. 🌺👊 Thanks much.

Love all your videos. That looks like a JKD straight lead, instead of a boxer's rear hand strike. That would probably work great for a guy your size. I am a smallish guy and need to throw a right hand from the back position and get my hips and body weight into it. The straight lead is great for a non-telegraphic shot.

I saw one You Tube self-defense video where the martial arts instructor advised the common layman to rely on primarily three, strikes, the edge of hand, the palm strike, and the hammer punch for essential, basic self-defense. Of course other self-defense counselors like Kevin will advise adding a few more useful, easy-to-use strikes like the elbow, knee, low kick, and head butt.

One punch defense? Totally unrealistic .That will eork only against a loud mouth that wasn't going to attack or a very weak fighter. Have you everr been iin a fight? Look at Street Beefs .A place where untrained fighters meet. See how much punishment an average guy can take.you will be surprised.

I liked your video, if you’re a martial arts teacher good, if you’re teaching self defense when something happens in the street that’s better. Like that you will get more followers because you’re making martial arts look more realistic. I also had a teacher like that, that he used to teach martial arts and self defense when street fights happened. One thing is just got to be careful not to leave the opponent any bruise or blood in the face because there is a lot of pussies today that grab their cell phones and call the cops.

Sorry, but in a court of law, unless he actually physically attacks you, especially in todays world, you're going to have a difficult time convincing a jury that you hitting him first is a self-defense move.

Question. Why use open hand if not trained in martial arts? Is it because you can break it easily?

You have a vast misunderstanding of the law of self defense. You should always hit first in an aggressive situation. That is true but you WILL NEVER win the court case and if you knock them out and they claim an injury from it, you are being charged with felony assault resulting in bodily harm. If you had any chance to run away, by law, you can't claim self defense. I know because I'm on a 5 year deferred felony from this sam3 situation

I'd never punch a stranger in the face bare knuckles given a choice. that's a good way to aquire a blood born pathogen. My co workers friend got hepatitis unknowingly this way, passed it on to his wife and died from it….

Ego battles are never ever worth it…. did some amateur boxing for a while in my 30's so punching isn't even something I would have to consciously think to do in that situation.

Obviously threats of imminent death or grevious bodily harm of you or a loved one is a different situation.

You just elevated the situation to one of battery on your part. Hope you have a good lawyer. This is why martial arts are taught incorrectly. The first thing a new student should be taught is defense. Learn how to avoid a physical attack so you don't end up in jail. After your attacker throws the first punch or kick then you're free to defend yourself. Remember, the courts take a dim view of martial artists so your defense is not just for your assailant but also the legal system.
