There are lots of great brands out there. This video is a focus on the design of the knife. We do not push one particular brand over another. Rather, we recommend getting the best tool to meet your individual requirements, situation, and desires.
This week on Tactical Rifleman, I’m going to talk about the fixed blade knife that I carry on my kit. There have been lots of questions about it, in past video comment sections. Guys talking about knives, is like guys talking about their trucks or sports cars; you’ll never get them to agree on anything.
So, let’s start the argument down in the comments section. I look forward to hearing our viewers’ thoughts and what brands they prefer (and why).
I personally, am rough on kit. So, I prefer gear that is good quality, but won’t break the bank. By that, I mean that I won’t hesitate to pry or bang with my knife (or rifle). However, I would gringe to think about prying with one of my $1000 custom knives. So, I don’t carry them.
Because you’ll ask, here’s a link to “Karl’s Knife:”
Blackhawk Night Edge I personally, would get the non-serrated version.

When it comes to sharpening knives, you need to master sharpening your knives on a good set of stones. I recommend amateurs start with a good set by Lansky. I used to deploy with a Lansky sharpener set all over the planet, and they work great. It’ll take you a while, but you can put an edge on anything from a machete to a scalpel blade. It’s a good way to pass the hours deployed.
Here’s a link to one of their kits: Deluxe 5-Stone Sharpening System

I show two sharpeners in the video. The first is the one in my kitchen. Literally, every Monday, I touch up my blade on the electric sharpener. If you look close, you’ll see black paint marker written on the top. That’s because I used to deploy with this same sharpener. It has served me well for over a decade. The second is my compact Field sharpener, that I keep in my bag. Light-weight and great little system. If you learned the basics on a lansky set, you’ll really love this little pocket gem. Here’s links to both:

Besides better videos… How about REAL Training? The Tactical Rifleman crew will soon begin offering open enrolment courses, on a variety of subjects. These courses can be held here, OR we can travel to your location, if you have enough clients and a range/classroom to support the training. So, for those of you that have been hinting about attending a class; start finding like-minded friends, and we’ll be putting classes together soon.
Hope you enjoy. Strength & Honor, TR.

Whst i would recommend varies from person to person, situ to situ. As well as being heavily dependent on training. For example i wouldnt recommend most people choosing a bigger blade like a Kukri etc but for a Ghurka? Thats a different story, they are in the wild a lot & will murk you with that short sword but thats b/c they are highly trained to do so. However Bob in your local militia probably isn't & therefore its basically just a dead weight. Oh & nobody needs to carry a katana. Its too big. Anything more than a large Bowie Knife, kukri etc is too much imo.
I pretty sure that It's not hard to figure out that Anybody In their right mind Would listen to you… Idk you but I'd say 17+ years(Estimated Enlistment time) that you've used about every Good combat knife there is in probably some very Life threatening situation's to learn what does ,& don't work. Keep up the good work my brother. Stay safe out there especially when it comes to our Government. Heard Active Or Retired SOF's have been thrown on chopping block for helping Us Citizens when it comes to 2A topics or Combat.
SIC SEMPER TYRANNISvery good video brother
OSU Sensei! You definitely know your craft! Thank you for your service and recommendations.
I agree a knife is a knife… that being said I’m still gonna keep spending money on overpriced knives 😂
I had a cold steel SRK and a Camillus CQB1 that I trusted my life with. I would take that SOG leather handle knife from the table. That is a fighting knife design from way back.
Knives like clothes should be based on the jobs you expect to do and personal preference. Liked the talk, I usually have more than one and have lately since last year started carrying a light fixed blade. One spyderco with serrations as it cuts plastic and clothing better than the sharpest straight edge.
I have a blackhawk knife.
I have used it real world, and have shed blood with it.
Fortunately, I haven't needed any stitches yet.
I am just a normal guy. I have been carrying a knife since about age 7. I lived in a rural area & as we would ride by farms the farmers dogs didn't know us & would come out & try to bite us. At this point I decided that if they were going to attack us, I needed to fight back & HURT them! I have carried a knife daily since then. 99% of the time it is a folder, so the AH HA moment came for me in 1972 when I was travelling in Europe I met a young man who had the most AMAZING folding knife I had ever seen. A BUCK 110 folding hunter! I went through Europe carrying a PUMA GREAT WHITE HUNTER, which I still have. In those days you just kept it in your backpack & NO PROBLEM. When I got back home I ordered my 110 which I still have.
What knife is in your war belt?
JUST FOUND OUT: Paragod knives/ Asheville Steel has on their website the remaining 250 of the last of the MOD NIGHTWING the origional made in USA ( the Blackhawk nightedge is the Chinese second generation).
These were customized with larger handles and a Kydex sheath …with tech lock.
Heck of a deal knowing an original MOD night wing retails for 500… some still selling on the bay for that.
Asheville has them for $169
I got mine and no disappointments here. The red handled is crazy sexy. ( keeping that one for house defense) , tan handled for truck /campin.
Just picked up two of those pretty little blackhawks….. tan and black
Good job.
What is your opinion on the Glock FM78 issue knife, with 6.5" blade? IMO, I think it is the best soldiers knife there is. Its light, compact and immensely strong. I also read in the area of soldiering slashing and chopping are not efficient 'threat nutralisers', penetration blows are number 1. But in saying this you have to have some training, most dont so they tend to default to choppers, which as you say are impractical to carry and from what I have seen in a real life combat situation are not efficient, exposing you to more risk. I would say the FM78 is an excellent penatrator, good slasher due to the 6.5" blade and poor chopper. It is prefectly balanced and can be thrown however. It is my prmary defense blade while in the woods and my utility knife is a Fallkniven F1 or a Terava Jarrika Puukko 110.
It always makes me giggle when I hear people say Katana Sword. 😁 Cause Katana means Sword. 😄 . It's like when people say Bō Staff. Well Bō , generally means Staff. But it's cool. Karl can get away with it cause he's a bad ass.
That second knife reminds me of a nimravus.
This is THE best tactical channel on YouTube, without a doubt!!
Full tang, Drop point 4 inch. Versatility is what you need.
Old school cold steel SRK in Carbon V made by Camillus.
I don't understand why you would use a knife for slashing, I would think using it to thrust instead would make more sense.
Knif
What’s the knife on the left side second place ?
I think that Blackhawk knife was used in MW3.
03:43 🤣🤣🤣
I noticed the okc3s usmc combat bayonet/ knife was not included. Have you had experience with it and if so was it any good? I would like to hear your opinions on it. It’s surprisingly hard to find reviews on it. Grate video as always👍
I'm sure you can't use all thiss stuff that's on your belt and in the bagage pockets. Most of them are not tactical man!
👍
This vid actually sold me on buying the Blackhawk Nightedge.
I heard some talk that Blackhawk had discontinued making them but I did find some sites that still sell them. I will use it as a light utility knife and for defense (if I my primary weapon is not an option). I have other blades that are better suited for camp chores and batoning.
Everyone needs a edc carry knife and flashlight
This was informative and well-thought out with personal experience and field testing. Thanks for the review. What branch were you in? MOS?
Where can I read or see stories of knife use during the recent wars of the US? I’d like to know what types of attacks were done with the knife? I imagine sentry killing uses the Stab in the throat. What about hand to hand use? I imagine the stab is also the move used.
My preferred fixed blade knife is a karambit. I started using them not long after my first deployment in 03, where I got caught with one that ripped my left arm wide open from elbow almost all the way to wrist. The guy that did it didn't survive, but I took that blade as a trophy. It got me interested in researching my own culture (Filipino) which I was unaware at the time (despite having trained in Kali my whole life) had a deep relationship with the karambit. Anyway, long story short- the karambit isn't for everyone. It does take dedicated training to be effective, but if you put in that training, it is almost unparalleled at close quarters combat and control (at least IMO). And I put emphasis one that aspect specifically because I caught a nice slice my first time over… Leaves a bit of an impression, you know? As for utility, I got multitools, and a kukri that I got as a gift. Ounces equal pounds, but the se are additions and sacrifices I find well worth it. I know I'm likely a minority in that aspect. 🤷♂
What do you think of the TOPS OPERATOR 7
Kabar still works
Full tang knives…only…
"Serrated knives are for people who dont know how to sharpen" well you just ended that inner debate for me. My kit knife is that Brown handled gerber on your table. No serrations version. The glass breaker is a gimmick but ive yet to wear the edge.
Great video! Oh wait I’m 4 years late, oh well! Nothing like watching TR with a good cup of coffee
OMFG: a katana…. what a POS….. no, no, no…….
Walther P-99 knife $21.00 bucks and it is solid. You won't be going back to the Ka-bar or Boker for a ton of money $$$.
Hey hey his comment abt marines is damn straight- ur local marine
Great video simple to the point and with experience.
Kabar tanto 🔥🔥👌👌
morganic blades makes very good knives of all makes, I am a fan of the Carson design blades very robust, yes I am a marine but the standard USMC fighting knife if not a full tang and have broken several in the field, however the kabar Becker is a full tang and are very good blades
my personal choice is a tracker style blade
Busse!
I love my Gerber strongarm. I've beat the shit out of it and it still with me.
I was more looking at the creases in your shirt like you just pulled it out of the package
I was a force Recon marine scout sniper for 22 years and a knife is just not a knife you get what you pay for but I will say that kabar sucks Kudos on the Work Sharp sharpener absolutely love them great videos and thank you for your service
This is a great video! not sure if the comment will still be noticed but whats your opinion about tanto style knives? not ideal for chopping, but for the slashing and stabbing they seem to be good and cold steel magnum tanto seems to be short enough to carry around unlike a katana
