This Video covers the proper way to load & unload your primary and secondary weapons.
If you surf the internet, you’ll find literally millions (with an M) of shooting videos. Several are pretty good, very informative, and professionally done. However, these videos don’t get many views or hits. Now, flip to the other extreme, and there are tons of videos showing very entertaining jackassery with firearms that, while filmed professionally, are down right unsafe. These get millions of views within seconds of them being posted.
When we at Tactical Rifleman were first contemplating making instructional youtube videos, we didn’t give a shit about being entertaining to the masses. What we wanted to do was build a place where operators, professionals, and gun-loving citizens could go to find good information on guns, gear, and training.
This video is the textbook example of what we wanted to do. While it is a simple and boring video; it sets a standard that is repeatable while also explaining why we do it the way we do. Every operator or student that attends one of our pistol/carbine courses has to learn the proper standard for loading and unloading their weapons. Now, while it does vary slightly by unit; most will agree with the need for this standard. There is a method to the madness.
Why do we load the Pistol first? Well, because it can then be placed securely in a holster that protects the trigger mechanism of the weapon. If we had loaded the rifle first, it would have been left hanging loaded, bouncing around on the front of our kit, while we we loading our pistol. We teach to always have positive control of a loaded firearm. Make sense?
Why to we check the sights? To make sure they work. This may be the last time you look at them before getting on the helicopter. Better to find out now, before getting on the bird, while you still have time to get fresh batteries or replace a broken fiber-optic sight before a match. Make sense?
Why load from your “Speed Reload” pouch? It’s just one more repetition… one more rehearsal of a speed reload; kept fresh in your subconscious mind. That’s the one reload that HAS to be SMOOTH & FAST; why wouldn’t you want to practice it every time you load? Make sense?
So, they learn these skills and techniques when they attend our courses, along with a thousand other little tidbits of information. Now, what happens two years later, when the Gunny tells the Lance Corporal to “go teach the new privates how to properly load & unload their weapons”? That Lance Corporal can now go to the web, watch this video to refresh the standards in his memory, and he can go out and teach a great class. Also, if the Lance Corporal screws it up, the Gunny can then send all the privates to go watch this video (while he sweet talks the Lance Corporal).
Our intent is to give you a place to go to find good information on guns, gear, and training. The other sites are fun to surf when you need a good laugh. However, when you need good tips and techniques, you can always turn to Tactical Rifleman. So, subscribe to this site. Share it with your friends. Add comments and questions. Thanks for watching. Strength & Honor, TR.

That move at 1:55 where he checks his surroundings behind him both sides tells you this guy is the real deal. Thank God he's on our side.
👍👍👍👍
Thanks Karl. I try to practice reloading magazines both in order and at random to teach some muscle memory for each.
No “apply safe” after action with the long ?
No firing off the action after working parts forward ?
Different strokes for different blokes but at least meantion safety discipline.
Good stuff.
Good stuff Karl
I can’t even pronounce Karl’s name properly. I’m Scottish and when we try to say Karl it comes out as Carol because we roll our r’s. I’d end up with a punch on the nose 😁.
Just my opinion on what i see in terms of safety. At 2:08 you hold the rifle with the left hand around the trigger compartment which given the amount of force that is needed to pull the slide and lock, it is not hard for a finger to go on the trigger. It is better to hold the gun in front of the magwell when doing this motion. Also at 2:31 when you lock the slide of the pistol back ,you should point to a safe area and with the gun pointing forward.A lot of the time during training at the gun range and especialy when clearing weapons ,shooters stand next to each other in a line formation. If you point the gun at the side, also very unsafe.I know that you are alone in the video as far as i can see ,but i just wanted to point out that if we are at the gun range with other people we should be extra careful !!
What is a speed reload magazine?
Very helpful, and enjoyed, thanks
Thanks for helping us become capable.
How to sprint from cover to cover with these two weapons loaded?
Great 👍
It's always good to periodically go over the basics!
Ahhh the good ol days 🍻
Karl…a 1911? Love it! Is there a decent 1911 mag pouch out there that I could look into getting..? We have cabelas and Amazon up here in Canada I’m afraid, not much selection.
Ahhh a classic when Karl was 22 years old. He looks good and yes close that dust cover
Consistency. That's something Karl teaches and practices. Seen him go through these exact steps at his training classes and I've adopted them for myself.
I like how this channel doesn't say "don't try this at home" and uses "always use proper gun safety when handling firearms". They're putting the ball in your field. Don't be stupid.
Thank you. I love the short format. It's clear without any fluff. These are great references for teaching. I do also love longer videos with stories and anecdotes.
Good stuff 👍. The only additional step I like to do personally is to verify the mags are actually full (using the witness holes or actually topping-off) vs. just making sure there is a round(s) visible at the top of the mags.
Okay, but why do I need to add an extra step by reloading my fast mag pouches, when I can just reach back and grab my mags I already got at the ready, in a pouch not meant for fast reloads? Not trying to be a smart ass, just genuinely curious.
*Edit, I mean after a second watching, why not just grab the mags out of your dump pouch in the first place. That’s just an extra step you added.
I like the administrative pistol load on the range. Keep it nice and safe in the holster until I’m out in the firing line.
Just like State when i was in Iraq contracting
Love rewatching all the old videos, so much good info. Great idea Karl and co!
Great stuff Karl, I watched this video multiple times when you originally posted it, and I will watch it again multiple times now!
What kind of ar is that sir.
What barrier/hand stop is that on the rifle?
That was back before they quit making Grecian Formula hair coloring. 😂😂. Always smart to go back and revisit/practice sound tactics. Short/sweet/smart video. 👍👍👍
Basics FTW!
Question….So I only have access to a bolt action scout rifle (I'm in the UK). When I have made safe I close the bolt and "dry fire" in a safe direction. Is this necessary or am I being over the top?
I love all your stuff and I am hugely jealous of your "freedom". Thank you for the amazing content!
Nice.
Question? How many times did the NYC camera people get heat exhaustion in Memphis weather at uncle Lee Van Arsdale's range at T1G?
When I need to load my pistol. I say Karl Erickson 3 times to summon the spirits of murder, then I insert my mag and rack the slide and then check my 6 to make sure Sergeant Major isn't there to call me a dumb ass.
Thank you sir I will practice today!!
