Home Defense Rifle: 5.56mm Vs. 300blk | Tactical Rifleman

Everyone likes “Ballistic Gel” Videos. So, here’s a quick one comparing a similar sized 5.56mm rifle against a 300 Blackout rifle.

Mike, a great friend of the TR team, just happened to stop to shoot and brought his home defense 300blk rifle. He asked about performance… Well, that’s a perfect time to film a video, right?

We didn’t use any fancy ammo; just “VMax” type hunting ammo that Mike uses for home defense against the closest “VMax” type ammo I could find at my house (my daughter’s hunting ammo). Very similar bullets, just different calibers.

I hope you enjoy the video. TR.

Pick a calibur and stick with it at ALL lengths. Waking from a dead sleep to grab the wrong mag with the wrong rifle means your dead. I went 300blk in 10inch, 14.5, and 16 inch. Commit lol

Welcome to 2024, where .300 blk ammo isn’t that much more expensive than 5.56

First time you were here. I just put together my first AR and I chose to do the 300 blackout so I’ve been trying to educate myself. Thanks for the video I will subscribe seem pretty cool and knowledgeable.

Why did you say the bolt faces are different for these two calibers at approx 2:45 ?

Should have a piece of denim on the front. No more over penetration.

I loaded 162gr AP black tip from 30 06 on 300 Blk and was able to penetrate 3/8" armor plate! 300 is more versatile than one might think.

I absolutely LOVE my 300 blackout. It was designed for a very specific purpose and it does it exceptionally well. I love the fact that it can be suppressed but still perform to original spec.

Doesnt the 300 blk need a shorter barrel tgan 16 inch to shoot better? Over 16 wouldnt 5.56 be better?

I’m worried about over penetration so I might just get a pcc 9mm. Yes I know pistol calibers can still over penetrate, but chances are lower than 556 or 300

Both will get the job done…if you go 5.56, i recommend at least an 11.5" barrel to get the velocity that cartridge needs to do what it does… with the 300bo you can go with an 8.5" barrel and still do work..

I have both 5.56/.223 and .300 Blackout. I'm not sure yet but I am alot more accurate with my .300 and love it. Every caliber have there limitations but .300 AAC 147 grain works for me within 300 yards.
