Tactical Rifleman had a request from a viewer that we cover how to setup your Body Armor. Ask and you shall Receive. In this video I cover just the basics, because that is all you really need. Keep your kit simple, carrying only what you need.
When you look at my kit in the video, it’s going to look like I’ve got shit slung everywhere randomly. Trust me, there is a method to the madness. Start with priorities, ammo for example, and position those pouches to allow rapid access under any conditions. Then move on to secondary items and position pouches for them.
Once you have your kit setup the way you want it; immediately go out and do PT wearing it. Go climb a wall, or better yet, go run an obstacle course. Go climb behind the steering wheel of a HUMMER. Go to the shooting range and try some transition drills. You may find that one of your pouches, while perfect standing in front of a mirror, actually interferes with you climbing or drawing your pistol. Find what works and what doesn’t. Then, fix and adjust those pouches, and try it again. Can you shoot, move, and communicate with your current gear setup? If not, fix it now; before your life depends on it.
Gear setup will vary by operator and by situation. Medics obviously carry more med gear. Commo guys obviously carry more commo gear. Breachers carry more breaching gear, and so forth. Running three mags deep on your front allows for access to a lot of ammo, but makes climbing walls a bitch. Running a slick front on your kit allows you to get low in the prone, but adds a lot of pouches sticking out on your sides. That normally isn’t an issue, until you are trying to get through narrow doorways in Afghanistan, and your sides are now too fat. Again, what is your situation? My kit evolves to match the current requirements.
You’ll see SWAT guys running their radios on their backs, but SF guys run them on their sides… Why? The SWAT guys work in a purely “permissive” environment. If they need to change channels, they can ask their buddy to do it. Now, switch to the SF Operator and he may find himself in a extremely hostile environment, pinned down and alone. He may need to change freqs to talk to a QRF or MedEvac bird. He can’t rely on someone else to swap his channels, so he locates his radio on his kit so that he can reach the dials.
We can talk fine details all day long; what-if it to death, and never get all operators to agree. Bottom-line is 35 pounds of lightweight kit is still 35 pounds. So, keep it light, keep it simple, and only carry what you need.

Why plates are so small?
Excellent, no-nonsense assault kit rundown. Thanks for the reminders!
What plate carrier is that?
I keep seven 5.56 mags and five 9mm mags on my kit along with a small Camelback backpack attached to my kit and that's it… I keep two 9mm mags and two 5.56 mags along with a dump pouch a knife and my holster on my war belt and my med kit is a fannypack i usually wear backwards having the pack against my back. That's been my set up for over 10 years
How did he set up the magpouches in the back?
Am very interested in a solution for that because i found out that this is the best position for a reload when prone.
If anyone has a solution let me know
I would love to see how you've got everything mounted on the back of your setup (how it's all attached), it's neat clean and organized and I'd like to duplicate it
Edit: Also, how and where exactly is that knife mounted? On the inside of the cummerbund?
Hey Karl, how do you have your camelback attached to the rear? I'm trying to setup the rear of my carrier and it seems the camelback would take all of the room to add extra attachments. Thanks for your help, brother. As always, keep putting out great material!
Andrew
Great video! What’s the danger in getting the flashbang hit on your plate?
He said the bare basics and had his carrier maxed out 😂🤦🏽♂️
Can I know what brand is the side mag pouch on the back of the plate carrier from?
A lot of questions, first my vest digs into my neck so how do I fix that, second what should I put on the back of my vest because it’s blank right now, third where did you get that helmet
how do yoy sit in transport?
How are you attaching the mag pouches under the GP pouch in the back? Same with that knife under the mag pouch on your belt? zipties?
Where were the vest and accessories bought at?
Great info!
Your the first person I've seen to put all your ar mags on the 3-9 o'clock positions on your PC and not at the front.
As a CIVILIAN, you need mags, plates (LVIII+ or better if you can afford slightly heavier plates), dump pouch, general purpose, IFAIK, and a tool pouch. Thats pretty much it. I know you guys REALLY wanna larp as Special Forces but in SHTF, you dont need a riggers belt. You dont need glowsticks. You dont need night vision. You dont nees IR lasers and PID devices. You are not door kicking. You are surviving. Do not go buying a ridiculous amount of shit youll never use. Military surplus and Gear stores are predatory in that they will try to sell you gear you DO NOT NEED. Acknoledge that you arent going to be jumping out of helicopters. You arent calling air support. You arent kicking in doors. Its all added weight that will NOT help you.
That kit has to be more than 35lbs. You have 15lbs in water and magazines lol. Thanks for the share……….
I personally prefer little to nothing on the front. When the shooting starts, two inches that mags add is huge when inches from death. I also hate cleaning my mags before reloading the AR-15. I'm not saying mags on the front are wrong, just not preferred by me for that reason. Thanks everyone for letting me put my two cents in.
Thanks Carl! Btw, what size plates do you run? If you dont mind. Wait,,,, did you say," Im glad you asked"?
Handguns in a near peer fight will be useless.
Where do you attach the fur missle?
Soo where can I get the flashbangs and door charges lmao
😆😆😆 He said all you need is the basics. I’d hate to see a fully loaded vest. 😆😆😆 Nice stuff and video though.
Sweet and to the point – no fancy introduction or goodbye poems – absolutely love it!
So just curious, why not put 3 mags on the front, and then distribute the other 3 to the side where you can easily reach every mag and perform quick reloads with them all?
His back is an open bar.
the price of Freedom is constant alertness and willingness to fight back.
many people joining territorial defense forces of Ukraine without any basic protective gear and body armor and as a patriots they're fighting for freedom even being shot
is anyone here willing to help with SAPI plates level 4 to protect Ukrainian people's lives?
way too much , i have 8 mags , med kit , samurai sword , 2 flashbangs thats it
I keep 4 tourniquets easily accessible my coworkers say I’m a pussy
Back your vest with high impact plastic from a Black 55 gallon clench top drum. Expanse in vest gets stuck in plastic
Holy shat. I thought he said don't carry a lot of crap??? Lol
Carl, I've called you out plenty over the years. You still and always have made great videos. I want to wish you and your family the best for 2022 and I hope I never have to apply what you have taught me, other than to " do my own thing" Happy Holidays you old softy 🙂
Hey bud umm….was just wondering 💭 where can I get some of those flash bangs?
But that belong what kind type solider in the war. If you are Medical you not bring too much gun or mag. If you are radar man you alway back of force with duty contract. If you are sniper, gunner machine gun you don't need bring Flashback or any bomb or grande. If you are solider incase you must know wwhat kind bullet of gun you use because have a time my partner in academy military he use a shotgun but he take wrong bullet size for his gun and don't have adapter and then he be warning because choice gun not remember size of bullet so he be back learn & do realoading gun many time. but all force must to bring bomb smoke to make point
Those "necessities" are already "a lot" (to a civilian) no wonder you'd want to "keep it to a minimum"..heh..Wonder how much all that weighs…To have to hump that around in the field…have to suddenly run and dive for cover…
How to set up your body armor if you are doing force recon. Ops?
This guy is blowing down a lot of doors
Ok but update how do you set it up now that youre not kicking doors anymore and are retired. Do you get rid of the bangers, demo, and other random odds and ends?
Water, Ammo, Special Equipment. I was a stickler for tying my sensitive items down because stuff moves and falls off LOL. I like the emphasis on all the cool guy crap not needed. I used to make people strip that BS off their kits. Had a CO that was a geardo UGH.
Are Leg platforms good for Pistol Magazines?
This man is a legend
What brand plate carrier are you running
What’s the name of that belt he has on??
Please tell me Sir how can I get this body armour? I'm from India🇮🇳
Not gonna lie. This looks confusing as hell to set up.
1:05 He said reach around. Heh Heh Heh!
