Before you ask, my personal IFAK pouch, Body Armor and War Belt are made by ATS Tactical Gear, check them out at http://atstacticalgear.com . They were kind enough to offer Tactical Rifleman viewers a 5% discount off all their products; just use promo code: tacr5

Following our “How to Setup your Body Armor” video, we received a lot of questions about my War Belt and also some requests that we do a separate video covering my War Belt. Ask, and you will receive!

The war belt in the video is made by ATS: http://atstacticalgear.com/

So, this week’s video covers how to set up your Duty Belt, currently called a “War Belt.” Assaulters have been running gun belts or duty belts for decades. These usually included just a pistol holster, spare pistol magazines and maybe a dump pouch.

Fast forward, and the current trend is to move commonly used kit from your Body Armor to your Duty Belt. This does two things. First, it helps take a lot of weight off of your shoulders (where your Body Armor rides), and transfers it to your pelvic girdle. This helps cut down on a lot of the pain of being in Body Armor all night long. 38 pounds of “lightweight” kit is still 38 pounds of “lightweight” kit. Any way I can help cut down on the pain, brother, I’m willing to try it.

Second, by running much of your commonly used kit on your duty belt, you can still develop and maintain that “muscle memory”, even when you’re not wearing full “battle-rattle” on the range. Whether you are just running a quick class or burning up a half hour on the range prior to the ops briefing, you can still shoot and reload from your support side, just like if you were in full kit. Also, while you are back inside the wire, and your armor is grounded in the ready room, you can still walk around the FOB with your duty belt and rifle. You aren’t expecting to get into a gunfight, but if it happened, you still have at least some ammo and medical gear. That’s better than nothing.

Setting up your War Belt is just like setting up your Armor; keep it simple and carry a minimum amount of gear. (Pistol / Ammo / Med / Special Equipment) Do you need to carry flash bangs? Probably not. I carry a few because I often use them in classes with students out at T1G.

I hope you enjoy the video and, as always, if you have a questions or comments please leave them below. Thanks for watching. Strength & Honor, TR.

Hey man, i have a similar belt setup to yours, but it is constantly slipping down. I have gone through multiple brands of belts and tightened them all as much as possible, but it's as if it still has too much weight. Do you have any tips on how to support the belt so it stops slipping?

What I wonder is how you prevent the belt from moving. When you go to crouch or prone,… the belt just slides up

Whenever a helo drops into a hot LZ that we are exfiltrating, I never trip over the humvee, unless my speed reload slows my ascent to the ridgetop LP/OP, just a few clicks away from the Blue Team rally point and casualty collection area, where the Harrier drops in for a strafing run on the opfor contact. Huah.

Is that a mid ride adapter that you have with your holster? You don't prefer thigh strap?

It seems like you have an awful lot of pistol mags, enough that if you were to forgo a couple you could carry at least one more rifle mag. I was running 2 pistol mags and 2 rifle mags on my LARPing belt…er… SHTF belt, but once I started added a light, multi tool, knife, dump pouch and blowout kit, I was out of real estate on the belt. I've about decided that I'd rather have two rifle mags and just one pistol mag if I have to give something up. Counting pistol mags on plate carriers and belts, it looks like some folks have at least 6 spare pistol mags. I'd prefer to fight using my rifle as long as possible, rather than the pistol, given the chance. Does half a dozen pistol mags vs a couple of extra rifle mags seem excessive to anyone else?

Karl, could you give me some more info on your holster in this video. I have been carrying a 1911. It is time for an upgrade. I got that belt from ATS, and love it, and I have been looking at Safariland, but cannot find that holster, but that is the one I want. I like how it rides, and it looks like the kind of retention that I want. I just got a Glock 19x, and I do not want to buy the wrong thing. What you are carrying in this video suits my style, and I could use your help. Greatly appreciate any input!

First of all thank you for your service Carl and for the time you put into these videos. I'm looking for a tactical war belt that fits me. I stand 5'3" tall and have a short torso for my height. I also have a 29" waist and was wandering which size ATS war belt I should order, (both the war belt and belt insert). I'm also considering a cobra belt if anyone makes one with the Velcro and sizing would also be a consideration with that. Given my short stature I was also wandering if the ATS Padded War Belt Harness would work for me. The reason I ask is I've had trouble finding chest rigs that will fit me given my short stature as well as war belts that won't slide down over my hips given my small waist size.

    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

Karl, how are you keeping your SOF T Wide tourniquet attached to your war belt? I see that the tourniquet is kept folded with two rubber bands, but how is it staying on the molle of your belt?
