How to Shoot a Double Action Pistol | Tactical Rifleman

The world has, for the most part, moved away from hammer fired guns. The reason is pretty simple: one consistent trigger pull

There are a number of reasons people dislike a double action/single action trigger. For example some people can’t reach the double action pull and it’s too heavy. Some people won’t put the time in to properly learn how to use it. An exposed hammer can create issues as well, like if a foreign object or some mud get in between the hammer and firing pin.

While all of that is true, I grew up shooting a double action/single action Sig P228 and never had any sort of problem with it during my service. I feel that as a safety system this setup is wonderful. I also feel that the longer and heavier pull of the trigger on the first shot is a kind of mental confirmation process for whether I truly need to take that shot or not.

In future videos we may take a deeper dive into this topic as there are more details to cover but these are the basic principles of how to use this type of gun correctly. It’s a bit challenging at first so the biggest secret is to force yourself to move at an annoyingly slow pace in order to ensure that all the movements and timing are correct.

I have an M9, but my fingers are a tad too short for an ideal grip on the DA pull. After the DA, I have to slightly readjust my grip which is not ideal because there is a little gap between the valley of my thumb and pointer finger. I sacrifice accuracy for that DA grip initially.

During practice, sometimes after draw I will cock the hammer for SA for ideal grip, but only after my environment is clear. I do not carry in SA

I'm no expert, but front sight focus and knowing what your target is and what's behind it is more important than mastering the trigger pull

Much appreciated. I've spent 20+ years shooting 1911s and am considering my first double action auto. Some testing I've done with a friend's DA auto has made me realize there will be a slight learning curve, and I'm glad you said so, too because it means I'm not bonkers. Great video and great demonstration.

What would be the purpose of dual action in this case? Long trigger pull on the first shot is better for safety?

Hi! I have an option to get either a CZ-75 SP-01 (manual safety version), Beretta 92A1 or M9A3 black. Which one would you suggest? My main requirements are durability and reliability but I have to say that the SP-01 feels much better in my hand. Thank you very much!

Why not when presenting the pistol pull the hammer back with your thumb? Which is how I always seen it done. Although personally I would keep my pistol without a round in the chamber and just rack the slide back when it's time to engage a threat. That way I have the safety of double action but the funtnallity of single action.

Father-in-law was a cop that started in the 70's with wheel guns for his service. The man is a wizard with a double action. He can lift the pistol at the target while the hammer comes back, and he can just sit there on the razor's edge between the hammer fall and the silent pause of threat assessment. He can just think the round down range and be right back there within a hair of blasting another one off. It's thousands of rounds of practice that make him superhuman. He can do it with a few adjustments on any pistol.

I’ve always struggled with the first pull on a DA gun. First shot gets squirrelly because of the heavy trigger. Not exactly great in a self defense situation. My work around is not to chamber a round in the holster, forcing you to rack the slide through the draw. Yes, there are drawbacks, but accuracy improves. I’m going to practice this technique, thanks!

    Excellent presentation Imri 🇺🇲💪🏼🇮🇱
My EDC P229 Legion DA / SA
    SRT trigger etc
Like anything, if you want to be good and improve doing something, it takes time and repetitions.
Added advantage for me with DA/SA – pull is high and long on DA allows me peace of mind for carrying in condition 01 / round in the chamber and all subsequent rounds after extremely short SA allowing for rapid follow up shots with an excellent trigger.
Add that to all the other Legion upgrades it makes a formidable sidearm
