This review is of a prototype for military use only, and is not commercially available.

Last fall, we gave everyone a seek peek at Textron’s submission for the NGSW contract; including the battle rifle and squad automatic rifle. The video was just a overview and left everyone asking to see more, like field stripping and loading/firing. You asked and we listened.

The NGSW contract was down selected to three companies… of course, like everyone, we wanted to see first hand what the next generation will look like. Textron Systems gave us a rare first look at their system; allowing us to film 48 hours of the Tactical Rifleman Instructors putting both their battle rifle and automatic rifle (SAW) through a series of extremely impressive tests.

This video, we are going to dig a little deeper into the Automatic Rifle (replacement for the SAW). THis puppy is lighter than the current SAW, is select-fire, and hits with more energy than a M240 with this new 6.8 ammo.

This 6.8mm CT system is awesome. While the actual capabilities are confidential, we tried to capture the spirit of the capabilities in this video. We hope you enjoy the video as much as we enjoyed filming it. We also want to thank Textron and the US Army for allowing us to share this 6.8mm NGSW system with our viewers. Strength & Honor, TR.

Where the quick barrel change when you are surrounded by hostiles and firing full auto non stop, nice to pop out a orange hot barrel for a cool one in 3 seconds?!?

So um, how do you change the barrel out when it starts overheating? Don't tell me it A.) Doesn't overheat, or B.) Isn't able to swap out barrels. One of the things I remember as a SAW gunner was how fucking hot those barrels get after just a couple 100rd belts.

Kinda sceptic about the ammo loading. You often times end up with separated peaces of link ammo, and then you'd be missing the pull thingy

A 6.5 creedmoor would have been fine or make a 6.8 creedmoor out of a 308 case simple

They could have just use the seven 7 mm 08 or use the 308 case and neck it down to 6.8

The fact that the barrel swap requires much other disassembly is a no-go I think that's going to be a no-go for decision you can't take the barrel out in 3 seconds like the other current weapons sorry

I'd call it the M250, I think that'll be the official name for it.

Textron is really onto something with this polymer cased telescopic ammo. However, I think there's still a few features missing that prevent this from being the number one medium machine gun ever made. There are many new features that many machine guns made nowadays have that in my opinion should be considered before a gun should be adopted by a military.

PROS: I do like the reduced weight, recoil, heat, and muzzle flash of the polymer cased telescopic ammo, as well as the elimination of the "brass to the grass, links to the sky" steps when loading. The shortened and side opening feed tray are great when it comes to reducing the chances of you losing zero on a heavy optic. The leader link on the belt is a great idea when loading ammo under pressure as well. Having the ability to fire on semi-automatic is great, especially when trying to zero the weapon. The ability to mount a suppressor is great, and the simple disassembly/ assembly is wonderful for troops in the field. It's lightweight is also a bonus. The fact you can aircraft load this weapon is great as well when it comes to safety and simplicity.

CONS: For one, feed retention pawls in the feed tray would help retain belts of ammo.

A three position bipod and two position carrying handle would help the ergonomics of the weapon.

Flip up tritium coated iron sights that can be used in conjunction with the standard issue optic are essential in my opinion.

Can it be mounted on a vehicle, or on a tripod?

Where is the quick change barrel?

Are there easily adjustable settings for the gas regulator to assist in suppressed firing?

Will there be different types of 6.8 (or 6.5) ammo, like armor piercing or tracer? I assume so, but if so, how will they be labeled with the polymer cased telescoped ammo?

The addition of a "catch" feature to retain the bolt and prevent negligent discharge should the charging handle not be pulled all the way to the rear would be an important safety feature.

    Are the controls ambidextrous?

Can it be charged on safe?

Can the rate of fire be sped up to aid in shooting down enemy aircraft, should the situation require it?

Can the links be made of polymer as well, to save more weight?

Can the tripod it's mounted on be made from polymer as well to save more weight?

Will there be some sort of barrel change feature to accommodate 5.56 and 7.62 ammo before we switch to 6.5/ 6.8 and .338?

I think companies still have a bit more work to do before machine guns reach their apex. We're almost there though.

I am so glad they replaced the SAW 249 with something more lightweight. I was a saw gunner and believe me every pound matters.
