There are many starting positions to choose from when conducting draw and shoot drills but, only one, in my humble opinion, is applicable to so many other situations. That stance is the “modified interview stance”. As you can see from the video, I am relaxed yet my hands are in the middle of my chest and serve to help my explanations and are able to react to several scenarios. This position may be uncomfortable for some of you. I understand. My theory is that the more training you have concerning fighting (boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing, etc) the more comfortable you will be in this position. It has become natural for me and is not cumbersome at all in any environment. So, get your butt some training in the martial arts or similar and help make the warrior mindset second nature to ya! Besides the fighting aspect, I feel that using my hands (I do it too much probably) helps to keep the attention of those I am talking to. Plus, I am passionate about what I do so the energy just flows out of me in that way.
Mechanically, I’m am just resting my elbows on my core at a comfortable height with my hands near my sternum. This is just what is comfortable for my body and requires the least amount of effort. See what works for you and how you can train yourself to be more prepared in close proximity to others.
Caveat, if you are just not an “interview stance” type person, be mindful of where your hands tend to end up while you are out and about. If it’s cold, they may stay in your pockets. If the weather is nice, maybe you just have them on your hips like a boss. Either way, if that’s your go to position, become skilled at running drills from there.

Default position should always be templed fingers, for me about solar plexus height.
Hands are either doing something, or they are templed.
Interview Stance is how I was trained.
Thanks zee
For God's sake people…leave Instructor Z's sack alone. Typically though if I am talking to someone and they are thinking about assaulting my sack, they get a certain look in their eye. That tell-tell look that says, I'm gonna kick this guy in the balls. Look for it.
I sweat a lot myself. Thats why I often wear Black T-shirts.
I've always been more of a hands on my hips kind of guy when I'm talking to someone. This totally gave me a new perspective. Great video, short and to the point. Keep up the good work.
day 3490 , we still have no idea what that intro actually says
Did he lose a wet t-shirt contest?
Nice intro into keeping good reactionary posture, however, as a retired LEO, we always kept a "bladed" interview stance, keeping gunside slighty further from your contact, just in csse things went south quickly. Just something for you side carrying patriots out there to consider..i still find myself blading off, even speaking to friendlies…old habits truly die hard. Stay safe guys!

"Hit me in the sack" never a good thing. But a very good point need to be ready for anything.
The "interview stance" has saved my life several times. There are folks who're locked up and I'm out here free and alive because I was able to respond to a surprise attack and overwhelm the subjects because I took the interview stance seriously. Hey, thanks for teaching this stuff. A lot of guys and gals out there don't understand the importance of this little technique.
I'm gonna call it the Green Beret interview stance. Sounds more taticool when I'm in my mom's basement practicing. So that I can impress my homies when we're at the range.
Thanks Instructor Z!
Excellent video Z. I'd recommend reading "Just two seconds." by Gavin de Becker. He discusses hand position and so much more.
Good one fellas. I use the interview stance as my base: on the range, dealing with crooks, talking to soccer moms. Great video!
Hands are great for creating distance, thats….. hands/fists. 😁
Instructor Zee won a wet t-shirt contest before recording this video.
Good pointer, thanks!
Learned this during a gross motor movement combat class. Very smart, very effective. Thanks for sharing.
i am 500th like! and like i do!
Practice from different stances because you don’t have any idea of what or when
Lighten-up! He was just getting ready to roll around in sand with the Frog.
Excellent point
instructor z….im scared if i carry my smoke wrench in the messican configuration i will shoot myself in da pills.
