We did a YouTube video a while back, that covered the basics of building your own range on your own property. There is so much more to it than just pushing up a berm and buying some steel targets. Med plan, legal restrictions, drainage, targetry, and 50 other things should be planned out BEFORE you start digging. So, if you are looking to build your own private backyard range, start there. You can find that video “How to Build a Range” in our video archive.
That said, once you have a range, everyone wants to buy a bunch of steel targets to put out there. Cool, actually, very cool… but let’s give it some thought. So, here’s the video with some topics for you to consider when buying steel targets.
Most of my steel is from two great companies: Shooting Targets USA and MGM Targets. Both are great companies. I am big on getting good stuff the FIRST time, so you don’t have to replace it.

I want to give a BIG “Shout out” to Shooting Targets USA. their products are AWESOME and they are priced affordable. Plus, I hit them up for a “Promo Code” to save you even more…
Use TACTICALRIFLEMAN to save 25% off all their products. Seriously, you can’t beat that!!!

MGM Targets also gave us a promo code… Use TACR10 to save 10%

Regarding your ā€œshepherds hookā€ I’m curious what the stand looks like or how the hook is attached to the base? Is the base sold commercially? Thanks

aim small, miss small. Period. Much respect for mentioning the "hard to replicate the stress". Not mentioned enough. Also, as of FEB 2024 the ShootingTargetsUSA code no longer works.

Great video! Really looking to buy a couple things. I found it a little odd that shooting targets USA didn’t really have any reviews at all on many of the popular products. Does this seem off to anyone? Making me second guess

I think the trick to shooting the Texas star is to knock off the plates before it has time to spin unpredictably. Saw a professional shooter did that in competition.

You can make pop up targets with rat traps. I thought of it in high svhool and made some. Work awesome.

If your steel target is set up to move it is not going to ricochet! All these people saying buy ar500 steel are usually selling ar500 steel. If its angled or hanging from something that allows it to sway back it will absorb the round!

Your discount code currently only provides a 15% discount on the website. Either there was a communication error or the company has changed the offer. Unfortunate as I planned to buy some targets after seeing these

Great video, I’m in the process of building my own personal home range. Why are all the measurements referred to in meters and not yardage?

for cheap and easy steel stands, put two bend in a piece of rebar. Drill a hole in two, 3ft pieces of 2×4 for feet, and hang the steel targets with chains. Cheap, easy, durable, and effective. ipsc targets or cardboard backers can be clamped to the stands as well using 2 alligator clamps.

Wouldn't shooting on plates that have divots from rifle rounds duplicate return fire? Dodge the ricochet.

I went overboard building my range. Stopped counting around 50 plates. Small tiny ones up to several 12×20 torsos and lots in between. Have a range building video and a recent walk thru look at it. Starting bolt action this month, so I'll be doing some changes soon to keep the difficulty level up so I can learn and go compete soon!!
Always like to see ranges, and some good tips here. I'll try a few of these ideas also!!

Do you have a video on what kind of movements/manuevers that you had to do in combat? If not, I would be interested in seeing a video on that.

Glad I watched this, I have a texas star in a cart now but think I'll go with the spinner if my club will allow it. Just seems you could skip bullets right over the berm if you hit it while it's leaning back at 45 degrees or so.

I sure miss the farm range. We used old fence posts/rails, dirt, and boards to build the backstop. Concrete blocks marked 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards. Targets included clay pigeons, cans, paper, steel, horse poop…
