He was convicted of negligent homicide and given 9 months of community service and $3,200 fine.

You assume he had insurance. You also assume people have $300, $1000 (deductible) in their bank account.
If the shooter has family in the trailer, I’d argue that the shooting was for self defense from kidnapping.

I don't think he should have been charged for anything. He gave the guy a chance to leave his truck and he didn't so put a round in his brain pan
I understand the law doesn’t allow deadly force to be used merely in defense of property, but it seems to me when the truck owner confronted the thief and the thief refused to relinquish the truck, it then became a robbery.
It's a shame the truck wasn't attached to the camper, then it's easier to shoot because they would have been kidnapping his wife in the camper.
