There are a lot more powerful and long range guns than a shotgun, it might ward off some who wouldn't want a hijack to be messy, even if they thought they might win but some might go ahead and follow through anyways. A rocket launcher would be best, if you can obtain one.
I wil not go to countries that will not let me dock in their marinas with my firearms. I have no interest boarding land with them and will declare them. I do not want to get caught in out at sea by thugs trying to take my life and have no means of defending my self.

I think it was the direct result of the warning shot that prevented any further conflict. The sound of the shot sends a message I have a gun and that this gun isn't for display only. Also that I am ready to rock n roll. I think warning shots are a great idea.

If I ever find myself in the middle of the Adriatic Sea somewhere between the Maldives and Yemen, I know what to do.
If you have an incident at sea involving gun fire, when you return to land, who would/could ever know about it? If this guy on the video, killed everyone on the other boat, if he kept his mouth shut, who would ever know?
An AR would have been a far more effective weapon than a shotty. That being said, it's still an effective defensive weapon for most circumstances

First : Adriatic sea is not near Yemen or the Maldives , it is between Italy and Croatia.
Second: they were not pirates , they are local fishermen who used to sell fish to foreigners to get US Dollars and Euros instead of Yemeni currency, the pirates were active near Somalia.
