Concealed Carrier Loses His Life Trying to Stop Mass Shooting
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter
[adinserter block="2"]

If you were there that day, would you have tried to stop this before it became a mass shooting? This is the kind of mass shooting attempt that doesn’t get into the statistics because it doesn’t meet the threshold for killing, but it nevertheless is sad and tragic. Joseph Wilcox should be remembered as a brave man, and we must learn Active Self Protection lessons from his death to redeem his murder.

Original video of the mass shooting with details of the investigation and more available here: https://get-asp.com/hrit

What can CCW holders learn from this mass shooting attempt?

1. Spiritual fitness is an important part of Active Self Protection. You don’t often get any advance notice of the last day of your life, but we see over and over that self-defense isn’t a guarantee of winning every fight you might be placed in. You want to be at peace with God and your loved ones, because you’ll need that peace on the day that you meet Him. Since you can’t guarantee advanced notice, make peace today! Joseph Wilcox didn’t wake up this morning thinking he was going to try to stop a mass shooting and die, so learn the lesson from his death and be at peace today.

There are five MORE lessons (at least) from this mass shooting attempt on our website, so head there for more: https://get-asp.com/hrit

Attitude. Skills. Plan.

I sleep in full, situational awareness mode. And, i do NOT, miss. Ever. Thats the first thing i look for. The more chaos, the calmer and more collected i become. Even as a kid i was that way. Haunted house ? Please.

He missed a critical clue in a failed situational awareness. Everyone is running for their lives EXCEPT Wilcox, and the accomplice with the cart. The face she was not running but following the path of the male shooter was a clue that she might not be a innocent. Most unarmed, normal people run from gunfire: She did not. Mr. Wilcox did the right thing, but did not pick up on the clues and he failed to check his 6. Sad end, but he was very brave.

Here's my issue with the general idea of involving yourself in an attack: the pro-gun community (of whom I am a part) is blatantly two-faced.

Whenever there's a mass shooting or attack, the megaphone people on the right proclaim that this is why people should carry guns. Attacks occur in gun-free zones because the attackers know there's less likely to be an armed victim there. Owning a gun allows you to respond immediately, while police are minutes away. And responsible gun owners are the people who could have stopped such and such attack (or HAVE stopped them). These are the kinds of arguments that ALWAYS get made from the pro-gun side when there's an attack, and the left tries to restrict guns.

The problem is, as soon as you go out of the public eye, nearly all those entities actively advise AGAINST using your guns to try and stop an attack. You don't know exactly what's happening. You open yourself to legal threats. You could die. Smart pro-gunners always advocate for training and safety courses, but any training or safety course that you take is going to tell you that in an active attack, you should leave. In my first training class, somebody asked what the instructor thought we should do if we found ourselves in an active shooter situation. His answer was "get everybody around you and get the fuck out of the building." And if you look online, the majority of people will say that his answer is the correct one. They tell you to not get involved.

So when there's an attack, the right gets on the bullhorn and laments how a responsible gun owner could have saved these people, but then they turn off the bullhorn and actively instruct their responsible gun owner supporters to NOT try and save other people. And the only reason this hasn't blown up in their face is that the anti-gunners don't go to gun safety classes and hear the real advice.

So the pro-gun community continues to shamelessly play both sides. They can't directly encourage gun owners to "be a hero" because they'll expose themselves to staggering liability. They're never going to do that. But they can't publicly encourage gun owners to save themselves and just leave the attack, because then they'd be admitting that responsible gun owners WOULDN'T have saved those people, because they're literally advised not to.

I just wish they could own up to it and take one stand or the other. Those of us who own and carry guns simply decide individually in the moment whether we'll run or fight. Neither is entirely good or entirely bad, but that's not what we get told.

There’s 2 types of men… One that runs away from danger, and then there’s ones like this man that runs toward it and takes it head on. Crazy to think he went into that wal mart just to run an errand and had no clue it was the last moments of his life. Just crazy to wrap my head around, that anything can happen at any time and to not take life for granted. Rest easy my friend. I know I’m late to the party just finally seeing this video now 7 years later, but I still feel obliged to give my condolences and to recognize this man as a hero.

Don’t engage if it isn’t your life, wife or kids. Your setting yourself up for civil liability problems even if you were right. Don’t be so quick to give away your life or livelihood. No one is going to feed your kids if you are dead.

So, I'm not downplaying the bravery and actions of Joseph, but I do find it interesting that nobody is acknowledging that having a gun increases the chances of gun violence.

The facts of this case is that this was not a mass shooting, in the sense that these perps were not killing indiscriminately. They arrived having killed two officers. They entered the store and fired into the ceiling, calling out for shoppers and staff to leave.

    Joseph, was tragically killed.

Then the two perpetrators tried to hold out against law enforcement and were killed doing so.

As I said, tragic. But if Joseph had not been carrying, he would likely have not been emboldened enough to try to apprehend the shooter. Had he not been armed, and had followed the shooter anyhow, it's possible that the second perp might not have shot and killed Joseph. Had he simply left the building, it seems highly likely that the resolution would have taken place just the same, and Joseph would be alive right now.

Joseph did have the weapon, and he obviously had the conviction that he would be able to resolve the situation himself. He showed great courage and put his life on the line for his convictions. One can only hope that you or I would have the same level of commitment when a life-threatening event was taking place.

Having said that, I feel that the CCW permit and carrying the weapon into this situation is a significant factor in his tragic death. I believe this 'need to carry a gun in case someone has a gun' mentality kills or injures far more than it saves.

The person in this video is promoting cowardice. Its not a "3rd party situation" you moron, its evil people trying to take out as many innocents as they can. If you find yourself in the same public place as an active shooter and you have a firearm, please do not take this mans advice and run away to protect yourself when you have the opportunity to extinguish evil.

This brings back a thought I've always considered. Along the lines of pulling a gun and drawing attention to yourself. Even if you are the "good guy" no one else would know that right away until they understand the situation. So a bystander could attack you as well, or like here where you have no idea who are all the threats.

even if you see the second perp, you don't know how many others are carrying. there's no way for any good guys or LE to know who you are. better you don't fill your hand until it's time to protect yourself or if you find it's time to go 1-on-1 in isolation. no?

There is a certain amount of risk and responsibility accepted when strapping on a firearm. It is easy to stand back and say, "Only for MY loved ones" – but the likelihood of YOU being present when your loved ones need you is small. So IF I am going to hope and pray that YOU will step forward to defend MY loved ones if I am not there – I have to do the same for YOURS. I will not stand idle while your loved ones perish and I ask you do the same for mine. If I die in the defense of a stranger – I die a person my family can think well of; if others die because I refuse to step forward – I may as well die, as being viewed a coward by my loved ones would be worse than any death.

This is the problem. Sometimes you want to be a hero, but you have tunnel vision. He should have seen. This woman was literally walking behind him with a cart and she was not scared of the gunman. She was following him and trailing him with a cart and a batpack, obviously she was In a compass and I would've made sure that I seen him. Put something in the cart with her and kept trailing them before. I incapacitated both of them. I don't discriminate
