How to Hold a Pistol | Special Forces Instruction | Tactical Rifleman

Gripping or holding the pistol is one of the more important fundamentals of shooing especially if you have multiple targets. With having a good grip on the firearm you want to hold it tight enough like holding a good firm handshake with someone. You do not want to hold it like your trying to squeeze blood out of a rock. Holding it this tight will fatigue your hand faster and make you have a slight shake. When holding the gun properly with a firm grip it will help you manage the recoil better and also get the gun back on target for follow on shots if necessaryfaster.

In the video I talk about holding the gun up as high as possible, this is because the closer you have the bore line of the barrel with your wrist and into your arm will help you absorb the recoil as the energy of the gun will flow in direct line from the barrel to your wrist and then in to your arms and shoulders.

Vid does not discuss wrists and elbows.
Grip alone, not all of the big picture

I’m a civilian, but have fired a firearm, obviously, and especially a pistol. I grip it, almost the same way, except my non-shooting hand I hold it almost like I’m holding an apple and clench my fist and I can fire and hit my target with no injury to my hand, andhave mobility when I aim down the sites. But I hold my shooting hand, the exact same way. This guy does it correctly, but I don’t know I’ve seen everybody use a firearm differently, and the only right way, is ways to do it safely. In my opinion. The only way wrong is to accidentally kill somebody that doesn’t need to be killed. That’s just my opinion though on gun safety.

Also, another way the thumbs forward way they say is the worst way. I don’t know who teaches that, but hold your left palm out like you’re going to put a big grapefruit into it then pound it with your other (right) fist. Clenched fist now put into the equation of gripping a pistol placing your right finger on the trigger and aiming down the sides of the barrel. That gives you way more stability than the way this guy does it.

Thanks a lot for the tip, very clear and helpfull. Im struggling with my glock 19 in IPSC competitions, i will try this. Just have one tiny question, should the left hand thumb apply pressure on the lower frame? or i just leave it there avoid touching the slide? thanks breforehand 🙂

when shooting, I use my left hand for supporting the right, means my left hand grabs the wrist of my right hand. my trainer says that's only used in American 80ies trash movies. I think this is more comfortable and lets more space at the weapon. your opinion counts for me, thought?

Nope! Not gonna put my left thumb anywhere near the slide action. Only because I am an occasional gun user. Accuracy be damned. That's what the 13 round mag is for.

Holding a gun doesn't matter it's how you execute the target.

She gets very close but in the video I noticed that her right hand thumb was slightly under her left rear thumb portion of her hand when you want it more of your right thumb over the rear section of your left thumb like more two dogs screwing

Yeah whatever pistols were designed to be fired with one hand hence the term hand gun referring to the singular not the plural

So often on TV Shows I see people that grip a firearm incorrectly! It affirms my contention that folks like this know nothing about firearms…… many times these are the same people that get on their soapboxes and wax eloquently about gun control and they make ridiculous statements……….

I can’t hit the broad side of a barn from inside holding a pistol like that. I have to use what is referred to as “thumbs down” and sometimes outshoot my instructors.
