I learned from my time delivering pizzas late at night to always pay close attention to my surroundings and make note of anyone in the vicinity. I still habitually scan the area around me every minute or 2 several years later. I also get my keys ready before I go in my house or car. I want the right one in my hand at least a few seconds before getting there and I want to do one last scan of the area before opening anything.
I live in Arizona and will never take my man cave shenanigans to the back. It's not because I am stubborn, possess many firearms or even the concealed carrying patriotic Americans drinking my cheap beer. It's because my wife built a pool and a garden in the back😔

Always have your key ready way before you reach your front door. She didn't want to try and grab his gun and risk her life or her families life.
